There is an interesting and unusual new set of sculptures in Chase Manhattan Plaza. On each of the eight or so circular stone flowerbeds there is a bronze speaker. On top of each is some artefact, often a macabre severed limb. The speaker has a motion sensor and when you sit nearby it plays the voice of a survivor of the Gernika massacre and then an English translation.
The sign explains more about it.
Here is an example of one of the speaking sculptures. If you don't speak Spanish (as I don't) you may want to skip forward to the English translation at the end.
Manhattan's pavements often have grills along one side, usually to ventilate the subways. I've always assumed that they are strong enough to walk over safely but I came across one today that had collapsed, which was a bit worrying. But the sign that had gone down with it gave it a certain comical air too.
