Today was such a lovely warm sunny day and I went to the seaside. I took the tube to Coney Island. It has a fun fair that reminds me of Portsmouth. Fun fairs always seem a bit outdated to me - a product of the 1970s.
Someone had dropped their chips on the ground, putting the seagulls into an excited frenzy.
One nuance that may have been lost on the seagulls is that their lucky windfall were big British-style chips, and not the thinner 'French fries' typical of the US. US French fries are much more like French fried pomme allumettes, and my guess is that's where the name comes from. Your typical British chippie chips are very hard to come by out here, which is a shame for me because I much prefer them. So seeing them lying on the ground caused me to become as excited as the seagulls. I didn't join in their feeding frenzy though - I bought some of my own.
I followed a walking route recommended by one of my books on walks around New York that took me along the boardwalk.
I passed a sight which is very familiar in New York but which I've never seen in England. It's like an outdoor squash court but with no side walls and people use their hands to hit the ball instead of a racquet. Perhaps it derived from fives. I don't know what it's called but it's very popular here.
The route took me over this rather pretty wooden foot bridge over part of the Rockaway Inlet. Those who view the full-size version may notice that the people fishing are right next to the no fishing sign.
