Guy Fawkes Warmed Up
I saw a firework display this evening and it occurred to me that watching firework displays in America is a more enjoyable experience than in England.
This is not particularly because the American ones are more spectacular, although they are. I saw one last year with shapes of objects, especially apples, being made in the sky, and the one this evening had two synchronised displays going on a couple of hundred metres or so apart.
It is mainly because English ones tend to be on November 5th (in celebration of Guy Fawkes' failed terrorist plot) and so watching fireworks traditionally involves standing in a cold, wet and muddy field and freezing your butt off. Whereas American ones tend to be done in the summer. I watched this evening's display sitting on a comfortable bench by the river.
If Guy Fawkes had been more forward thinking he would have tried to massacre the English parliament in the summer.
